Make It Do
I love to shop so much that I am often guilty of consciously or unconsciously continually shopping for replacements or upgrades for things I already own, even when they don't need replacing. Yes, I know manufacturers are always coming out with new features to entice you to spend money replacing what you already have, but you will save money by stopping to think twice and analyzing whether or not a purchase is necessary.
You also have to figure out what to do with the item that you are thinking of replacing. This is one of my downfalls, as I tend to hang on to the old and the new, creating excess clutter. It's partly because the old one isn't worn out yet, so I'm not ready to part with it.
So when you are tempted by new bells and whistles, put emphasis on what you need and less on what you want. It's the wanting that tends to get folks in financial difficulties, so remember to "Make it do" whenever possible. That translates to less time spent shopping, less expense, and less clutter.
Do Without
If you don't shop, you won't spend money. If you don't spend money, you will be saving money. So take an occasional break from shopping, especially the recreational kind that leads you to aimlessly wander store aisles trying to find something—anything—to satisfy your shopping craving.
I understand how addictive the buying habit is. I admit that shopping actually cheers me up when I need a pick me up. I have always loved the excitement of seeking, finding, and buying that perfect something to add to my collection of specially chosen possessions. I don't even care whether it is from a fancy store or Goodwill. The buying process is what triggers the endorphins.
Of course, I also get a lift from food treats when I'm down, so I would save a lot of money and calories by finding other forms of recreation to brighten my day. Clearly, doing without recreational shopping and emotional eating is a great way to put a halt to unnecessary expenses and keep your budget in balance.
