Money Saving Tips
There are so many ways to save money, and I am always coming across new ideas and tips that I want to try out. In the months ahead, I will be sharing some of my favorite money saving tips for Penny Pinching in Portland.
When I tell friends about my web site, I like to ask them if they have favorite ways to save. To see some of their suggestions, check out these tips from my friends. I hope you will find my money saving tips helpful and worth passing on to your friends, too. Stop by again soon!
Use It Up
For food and household items that I use regularly, I like to buy extras when these items come on sale. This keeps me from running out, or worse yet, having to pay full price. However, I would strongly recommend having a good storage system that includes rotating your stock. I also keep a list of things that I am watching to come on sale. If I get down to my last one, I put a star next to it so that I know I need to buy it sooner than later.
Occasionally I have found that I bought too far ahead or even forgot that I already had a backup supply (thus my encouragement to have a good storage system). So the old adage of “Use it up” is important to keep in mind before you buy more of something you already have.
You never know when your tastes or needs will change, and sometimes items get orphaned when you move on to other interests. When that happens, find a friend who wants it or donate it so that it won’t go to waste. more>

Wear It Out
I’m a short person, so I often have to alter new clothes. I also have to buy shoes in a hard to find size. With all the work to get shoes and clothes to fit, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that I like to make them last as long as I can. When I am at home, I always take my shoes off around the house. Not only does this keep the carpet cleaner, it definitely puts less miles on my shoes.
Also, when I get home from work, I change from my nicer work clothes to older clothes for around the house. Casual clothes are usually cheaper and easier to find, and this makes my work clothes last longer. Eventually it all wears out, but the tradition of saving Sunday clothes for Sunday makes a lot of sense in terms of getting the best use of your clothes before they wear out.
I do have friends who have an opposite philosophy. They have a minimalist approach of having one pair of athletic shoes, one pair of dress shoes, a couple of pairs of pants, a week’s worth of tops, and one dress up outfit. That works well if you can go to the store and buy new clothes right off the rack that fit when you need to find replacements.
Whether you start with a lot of clothes or a few clothes, be sure to wear them out or at least pass some on to someone who will. more>
