Saving Money on

Restaurants

continued from Home

It is so refreshing to read the restaurant reviews by the Fearless Critic, because I certainly wouldn’t have had enough money to try all of the restaurants listed in order to determine which ones are good.

The restaurants have been sorted into categories, and I particularly like the lists for Most Delicious, Good Vibes, and What’s Still Open? The restaurants are also sorted by rank, and prices are listed so you won’t get sticker shock when the bill comes.

As I was screening the Most Delicious list for the restaurants that were highly ranked (7.0 or higher) but posted modest prices, some of the restaurants that caught my eye were Best Taste, Tábor, The Waffle Window, Basha’s Mediterranean, Nong’s Khao Man Gai, and Le Happy. Le Happy and 5th Quadrant look like good bets the next time I’m searching for affordable good eats after 10:00 pm. Many thanks to the editors and critics of this book for helping me to save money and get the best value for my dining dollars.

Perspectives on Restaurants

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant and then felt like you had wasted your appetite and your money? I have certainly left some restaurants knowing that I will never return, either because I didn’t like the food or, more often, because it was just not a good value for the money.

I’m not adverse to splurging now and then when the food and dining experience is really special. I love a great meal, especially when it is something that I would never prepare myself. When it comes to cooking, I like to keep it simple, so I have a lot of appreciation for more>

gourmet food with a long list of ingredients.

Determining whether a new restaurant is worth trying requires a bit of research, so I was delighted to discover the Fearless Critic: Portland Restaurant Guide, which is like having best friends give you advice on where to go, and what’s good on the menu and what’s not. I’ll be posting my favorites from this book in the weeks ahead.

ZapHour

Here is a “catch it quick” concept where you can go to the ZapHour web site and find special offers from some of your favorite restaurants.

The only catch is that there are only a limited number of offers available, and they are for a particular time and discount. The idea is to “zap” them up before they run out. With discounts running as high as 50% off, it is well worth your time to check this out. It’s free to join, and there are more categories of fun and discounts coming soon.
